Chapter 1- this chaper started out by describing all the characters of the book, and also described the situation that was occuring with the celebritie know as Lindbergh. Philip, a yound boy in New Jersey is living with his jewish family ina primarily Jewish neighborhood, where all the neighborhood men own their own business, or small shops. Herman Roth, the father of Philip, got a promotion and an opportunity to live in a new upper class neighborhood. He turned down the offer after visiting the town of union, cause it was a German occupied area. He wanted what was best for his family, and so he decided that he didnt want to put his family inn the situation of them being the minority of the town. On the downside it would have gave them financial security.
Lindbergh was a well know celebrity around the world. he was the first person to fly across the Atlantic in one round trip, and his young baby was kidnapped and murdered. Everyone sympathized with him, which made his social status grow. He was nominated for the republican canidiacy to run against FDR. Most people favored Lindbergh because he was a celebrity and he didnt want to go to war. On the other hand Jews disliked him because he was the nazi sympathizer. Most Jews didnt want Lindbergh to be President because if they became allies with Germany and Japan, America could turn fascist.
Chapter 2- Lindbergh becomes President. Alvin, the cousin of Philip, is working for a friend of Herman but the friend is a fiend. Alvin, knowing this, tries to explain to Herman why he doesn't see fit working for him even though Alvin isn't the softest feather on a bird either. Herman originally got Alvin the job so that Alvin can see how a business is run but Alvin would prefer going to fight in the war. Well of course Herman rejects him and without their consent, Alvin goes to Canada to help fight in the war.
Philip and his family take a vacation to Washington, D.C. to visit historical sights and famous government buildings. While they were in the hotel looking around a tour guide introduced himself, as Mr. Taylor. He offered to show them the sights for a reasonable price. While touring, Herman and another man on the tour got into an arguement about the current president and government. Aft

er they finish touring and had gone back to the hotel, Herman and the family was bewildered as to why were their belongings were packed and at the front desk. A frustrated Herman verbally lashed out at the manager of the hotel about how they had made prior reservations yet were still being kicked out into the streets. This bought the Roth to the attention that they were being picked out for being Jewish and soon even the cops were involved. As a good, honest guide would; Mr. Taylor intervene and found a new hotel for the Roth to stay at in replacement.
Chapter 3- The Hitler-Stalin Non-Aggression Pact is broken by Hitler when he attacked Russia. Linbergh then announces that Hitler is the world best safeguard against communism. He don't mind aligning with Germany or the USSR. Linbergh introduces a new program after that which the purpose is to remove all Jewish boys from the cities and their families. With that in mind Sandy leaves Newark to work in a farmlandmin Kentucky, but Herman doesn't see fit for Sandy to go yet Sandy has the support of Aunt Evelyn. It seems everyone is blinded of the program true purpose but Herman. Alvin goes off to fight German in the war but is injure and loses a limb. Soon after Sandy returns from the farm and finds that it's boring living at home. Herman is uneasy because he is worry that Hilter might lead the U.S.A. to fascism from breaking pacts. Later Rabbi Bengelsdolf comes to visit the Roths to talk about Sandy's experiences.
